Société Générale and Mastercard partner to launch gamers payment cards

ociété Générale and Mastercard have partnered to launch a special edition League of Legends Card, the first payment card in France designed for gaming fans, and offering them a number of exclusive advantages.

Also referred to as churning, credit card gaming involves the use of multiple loyalty reward cards for the sole purpose of earning rewards. These gamers earn trips, cruises, merchandise, cash and more through numerous points, miles and cashback offers.

Société Générale and Mastercard are reinforcing their engagement in e-sport. Mastercard is the exclusive payment services partner for global League of Legends sports events, one of the world’s most popular e-sports.

This adds to the long list of sports and events already sponsored by the brand.

As for Société Générale, the bank is the major sponsor of the professional League of Legends team, Gamers Origin, one of the leading e-sport clubs in France.

The benefits

Société Générale has been able to use the expertise of the Gamers Origin team to propose exclusive advantages to holders of this new limited-edition card:

  • Up to 30% discounts with partners for the purchasing of material, by-products and spin-off products or for the rental of gaming material;
  • League of Legends coaching sessions with the professional players of Gamers Origin;
  • Visits to the Gamers Origin training centre and onsite viewing of League of Legends French League matches.


This launch is accompanied by a major communication campaign, including a competition to win VIP access to the final of the world championship in November in Paris via Mastercard's Priceless programme. This includes, premium tickets, meetings with players, and backstage tours.

Mastercard is one of the first global brands to take a step forward in e-sports on a worldwide level.

“We are delighted in France to partner with Société Générale for the launch of the first League of Legend card in France, that offers its cardholders unprecedented priceless experiences,” says Solveig Honoré Hatton, country manager at Mastercard France.

For over 10 years, Société Générale clients have been able to choose from a catalogue of special-edition cards. With over 180 varieties available, the bank claims to offer the broadest choice in the market.

“Thanks to Mastercard, we can give fans of League of Legends the opportunity to have a payment card in the colours of their favourite video game and offer them exclusive and unforgettable experiences,” says Philippe Marquetty, payments director at Société Générale.

Société Générale pursues an active sport sponsorship policy

Société Générale has been involved in sport, and in particular rugby, for over 30 years.

“Now, since 2018 and in keeping with its tradition of innovation, it has associated its name with e-sports via the GamersOrigin club, with which it shares the values of performance, rigour, team spirit and commitment,” the French bank said.

Société Générale also claims to be the world's first “traditional” bank to associate itself with a professional e-sports team.
